Private funeral for FW de Klerk FW de Klerk

The world will not be able to witness the funeral of former South African President FW de Klerk.

His family yesterday announced that it would be holding a private send-off for him. In a short statement issued by the FW de Klerk Foundation it was announced that de Klerk, who died on Thursday after a battle with cancer, would be cremated in a private ceremony.

“The FW de Klerk Foundation wishes to announce that FW de Klerk’s cremation and funeral will take place on Sunday, November 21. It will be a private ceremony for family members and will not be open to media,” the foundation said.

According to the government’s funeral manual, De Klerk had been entitled to a State Funeral Category 1 funeral which is reserved for the president, president-elect and former presidents of the country.  — Sowetan.
