Prince Edward, Churchill resume rivalry

PRINCE Edward and Churchill High Schools rivalry will resume this afternoon at the opening game of the Eversharp Under-20 Schools Basketball tournament where more than 20 boys and 12 girls’ schools are expected to turn up.
The two-day tournament will see both boys and girls battling it out for the coveted trophies and cash prizes at Prince Edward.
Prince Edward and Girls High are the defending champions after they won the tournament last year.
Defending champions Prince Edward will face competition from NASH Under-20 champions St Bernard’s of Bualwayo, Churchill, Dzivaresekwa 2 High, and Kutama among several others while Girls High will have to contend with Mt Pleasant, Murehwa High, Evelin High and Bradley High.
Tournament co-ordinator, Sledge Chinyoka, said all is in place to host the tournament which bounced back in 2022 after it was last held in 2019. “We are happy to announce the dates for the 2024 edition of the Eversharp Under-20 Basketball Tournament which will be held on October 20 and 21 at Prince Edward.
“We are looking forward to a big and better tournament as we have already started processing the fixtures and the verification process.
“We are expecting over 30 schools and PE and Girls High are the defending champions. This year we need to em-power non-traditional playing schools so that we can avail players from those schools to be scouted. Hence, get an opportunity to be selected for the national team.
“We look forward to a competitive event as the tournament is growing with each passing year,” said Chinyoka. Eversharp marketing manager, Tonderai Kamusoko, said they are happy to have the tournament back and are looking forward to a competitive tournament.
“We are happy that the tournament is back again this year as we are celebrating our 51st anniversary, we saw it fit to have a bigger and better tournament. As Eversharp, we have always been supportive of the physical well-being of our major stakeholders who are schools and the nation at large, so by supporting sport we also expect to build careers for the students. Sport gives opportunities and this is our way of saying thank you as they help us celebrate our 51 years in existence.
“We are looking forward to making the event bigger and better with each passing year,” said Kamusoko.
