Drilling of boreholes under the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme has begun in Glen View, Harare, as the Government paces up efforts to end water woes in the capital city.

The scheme started in Chitungwiza recently and has spread to most parts of Harare Province.

Yesterday, the team was in Glen View 3, drilling and installing solar on the boreholes.

Already, seven boreholes have been fully drilled and had solar systems installed.

The project is now taking a revolutionary turn where the water from boreholes would be fed into household taps.

In an interview yesterday, project director Mr Gideon Tungwarara said at least 80 households would benefit from the pilot project.

“We are looking to have water onto household taps and at least 80 households are set to benefit from this pilot test,” said Mr Tungwarara.

Once the project is successful, it would be broadened to include more households around the Glen View area that has faced perennial water challenges in the last two decades.

The scheme’s chief executive officer, Mr Tempter Tungwarara, said they were targeting 350 boreholes in Harare.

Other constituencies to get boreholes in Harare are Highfield East in Ward 24, Highfield West in Ward 29, Kuwadzana 6, Kuwadzana 4 in the Paddocks area, Kambuzuma, Mufakose, Harare Central (Queensdale), Harare East (Chikurubi Maximum Prison and Support Unit), among others.

President Mnangagwa launched the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme in Chitungwiza ahead of the March 26 by-elections, and promised to deliver clean water across the country.

To illustrate that the scheme was not a campaign gimmick, it has continued well after the by-elections and will, in fact, be expanded.

The scheme is in line with President Mnangagwa’s vision of providing clean water to all citizens, especially in urban areas which have been run down by opposition parties since 2000.
