The people of Shurugwi should take a leading role in safeguarding the sanctity of independence in honour of the late ZANLA Commander General Josiah Magama Tongogara who hailed from the district. This was said by Zanu-PF Central Committee

member Cde Emmanuel Fundira.
Gen Tongogara died in 1979 in a car crash in Mozambique after playing a pivotal role in the fight for independence, which brought to a halt the white minority rule in Zimbabwe.

Last year, President Mnangagwa heaped praise on Gen Tongo’s contribution towards Zimbabwe’s liberation.
The President was speaking while officiating at the renaming of KGVI Barracks to Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks.
It was against this background that Cde Fundira, who also comes from Shurugwi, said the people of Shurugwi should safeguard the legacy left by Gen Tongogara.

“It is against this background that the people of Shurugwi should play a leading role in preserving the gains of liberation in honour of General Tongogara and many sons of Zimbabwe who sacrificed their lives to liberate the country,” said Cde Fundira.

“I visited many centres in Shurugwi on Independence Day and the excitement was really great from the people of Shurugwi who gathered at the different centres.

“We are actually working on a number of projects to improve the lives of the people of Shurugwi, which is in line with what the President has always said.
“I am from Shurugwi and I know the challenges and the needs of the people and I am working on improving those.”
Zimbabwe last week celebrated the 38th anniversary of being a sovereign State, but it was the first under the new political order led by President Mnangagwa.

Shurugwi Town Council chairperson Tsungai Makore said this year’s independence celebrations came at an opportune time given progress made by the new government.
“A lot of investment opportunities are being opened up by the new dispensation which gives hope of a better future in the horizon,” he said.
“This year’s independence is independence with a difference which has assured in a lot of hope to the people of Shurugwi.”
