A CRACK unit from Marondera police intercepted 150 kilogrammes of mbanje destined for Harare last Friday, exposing a tightly-knit syndicate of drug peddlers.

The four drug peddlers were using two motor vehicles, while feigning a breakdown in order to transport mbanje.

Acting Mashonaland East police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the interception, saying investigations were still underway.

“Our crack unit manning a roadblock at the 71 kilometre peg along the Harare-Mutoko Highway ordered two Toyota Wish vehicles which were towing each other to stop for a search,” he said.

“A black Wish being driven by Noel Jamela (35) and one Memory Gunje (36) was towing a silver Wish under the control of Peter Chigodora and Tendai Hungwe (35).

“After being quizzed about the contents of the three sacks in the silver Wish, the duo in the car revealed that they were carrying dried vegetables for sale at Mbare Musika. Upon opening the sacks, our units discovered that it was dagga and the quartet was arrested.”
