DETECTIVES in Mutare have launched a manhunt for an armed robber who allegedly forced his way into a bottle store and stole five cellphones and $102,50 at Mutasa Business Centre, before disappearing.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident, which occurred on June 11 during the night.

He said the bartender Privilege Mudavanhu (24) locked the bottle store at around 10pm on the day and went to sleep.
“At around midnight, the unidentified thief cut the burglar bars using an unknown object and got into the bottle store through the window.

‘‘He took one Samsung cellphone, one apple phone and one Itel phone which were being charged,” he said.
“The accused person searched the bottle store further and found $102,50 in a box which was on the fridge.
“He went to the bedroom where Madavanhu was sleeping and got in through the door which was not locked.

‘‘ Madavanhu woke up and saw the accused person holding an iron bar and a screwdriver and she screamed.”
Insp Kakohwa said the assailant assaulted Mudavanhu several times with his fist and she sustained a swollen eye and cuts on both lips.

He then ordered her to lie down and threatened to kill her if she resisted.
“The accused person then took another Samsung cellphone and a Nokia 1200 in the complainant’s bedroom and escaped through the back door,” he said.
Madavanhu then went to the neighbouring shop and called the owner of the shop.
A report was made to the police and investigations are still in progress.
