Normalcy has returned in Glen Norah in the capital where a number of prospective home seekers were being illegal allocated residential stands at open spaces dotted in the area after paying US$10 each to unauthorised people.Police sent in the riot squad last Friday which ordered the illegal settlers out. No sign of activity was witnessed at the open spaces in the suburb yesterday, but pegs and pits dug at most of the illegal residential stands were still visible.

People in the area said the home seekers were dispersed on Friday after riot police camped at one of the open spaces between Chitubu and Glen Norah B.

“These people (home seekers) would come here every morning, allocating themselves stands and disperse at dawn, but since the Friday incident no one has returned,” said one resident of Glen Norah.

He said people were made to pay US$10 for them to get a residential stand after which one was able to start developing the piece of land.
Some people had begun digging pits on the illegal residential stands for construction of pit latrines.

Police spokesperson for Harare province Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed that they sent riot police to remove the illegal settlers as part of their mandate to maintain law and order.

Inspector Chibanda said those who lost out in the scam should make a report at the nearest police station.
“As the police it is our mandate to maintain law and order that is why you saw us there,” he said.

Illegal allocation of residential stands is also taking place in areas such as Budiriro, Kuwadzana and Chitungwiza.
