Police in Shurugwi have arrested a 57-year-old gold panner who, together with three accomplices, reportedly murdered an alleged leader of a rival gang due to a dispute over a gold claim.

The incident occurred last month and the quartet had been on the run since then. Police detectives nabbed Edward Kapindu at his rural home in Chikato Village following a tip-off.

He was accused of murdering Amos Mawere (28) of Kanondo Village under Chief Nhema. Kapindu was not asked to plead when he appeared before Shurugwi magistrate Mr Tayengwa Sangster, who remanded him in custody to February 16 and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor Mr Pride Gomera told the court that on January 5, Kapindu and his accomplices lost a fight over a gold claim to Mawere and his gang. They armed themselves with machetes, spear, knives and iron bars to take revenge on their rivals. — Midlands Bureau.
