The housing backlog here is expected to decrease after council struck a deal with the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) to build 600 low-cost houses.

The city has an estimated 10 000 people on the housing waiting list.

Masvingo Mayor Councillor Hubert Fidze said NSSA expressed interest to help the local authority in addressing its housing challenges.

He said the massive housing project would commence soon after the completion of a 4km trunk sewer project being undertaken by the city.

“We are pleased to inform our residents and other stakeholders about the ambitious project of 600 housing units that NSSA plans to develop in Masvingo,” said Clr Fidze.

He said NSSA had long identified land for the planned housing project with indications that work will kick off early next year.

“We have identified land for the massive NSSA housing project that will be undertaken near the Jairosi Jiri area close to Mucheke Stadium,” he said.

“Once we have completed constructing the Mucheke-Rujeko trunk sewer system, work on the project will begin.

“We are engaging the same organisation to make sure that we complete the sewer trunk line soon.

“We inherited the project from the previous council in 2013 and there are some hitches stalling its completion.’’

Clr Fidze said NSSA pledged to avail $2 million to complete the sewer trunk line project.

“The project (sewer trunk line) was left at 70 percent and NSSA has promised to disburse funds required to complete it and pave way for the construction of 600 housing units by the same,” he said.
