Nhekairo-Chigondo Road rehabilitation falls under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP) and already, there is notable progress, as Government works around the clock to rehabilitate and make all roads across the country accessible.

Mashonaland East Provincial Road Engineer, Mrs Martha Ndoro, said the contractor was already on site and work was underway.

“Contractor is already on site and there is work being done,” she said.

“Designs have just been completed and the contractor is taking more equipment to the site.”

More than 15km of the road from Nhekairo Shopping Centre has been completed and was opened to motorists.

Fossil Contracting is now working on the 12km stretch which will take them to Chigondo Business Centre, about 40km from Hwedza Centre.

The completion of this important road will boost economic activities in Hwedza District, a community with a lot of commercial farmers.

There is an irrigation scheme about 2km from Chigondo Business Centre and most of the farmers take their produce to Hwedza Growth Point for markets and the road when complete will see a reduction in transport costs.

It will ensure that there is competent and affordable transport system for commuters who would want to travel from Chigondo to other destinations.

The road is also one of the shortest links between Mashonaland East and Manicaland provinces.

Meanwhile, repairing of the Rwenya bridge which was severely damaged by a Cyclone in 2013 has already started, with the Second Republic now determined to end the delays that had been bedevilling infrastructure development and maintenance in the past.
