FORMER Harare Basketball Association champions Harare City Hornets have named coach Samuel Mutsvangwa as their new gaffer.

The former Hustlers coach takes over from Langton Moyo.

Moyo left the Harare City council team last month after a hugely successful two-year stint during which he won the national championships and some international tournaments.

City Hornets, in a bid to reclaim the HBA crown which they surrendered last season after finishing as runners-up, have now roped in Mutsvangwa.

Mutsvangwa was happy to join the HBA giants.

“Being a former player at Mbare Bulls club and a former Hustlers head coach before I was appointed to the national women’s team, I believe I have the ability to add value and improve the game although the team has a number of highly-rated players”, he said.

Mutsvangwa led Hustlers to a second place finish in the HBA in 2016.

“Before l was appointed at Hustlers, I managed to win bronze at (Under-20) 2016 African Union games with the national women’s team,’’ Mutsvangwa said.

City Hornets chairman Sunny Mbofana said they had appointed Mutsvangwa and another assistant coach, Tapiwa Mangunyana.

“We are happy to announce the appointment of Samuel Mutsvangwa as substantive coach for the Hornets men’s team with immediate effect.

“To assist him, the club has roped in coach Tapiwa Mangunyana, also known as ‘TP’ to complete a three-member structure which features coach Mike Nhira,’’ Mbofana said.

The HBA 2018/19 season is expected to start on the first weekend of September and City Hornets are looking to unveil Under-17 teams as part of their efforts to develop basketball.

Mbofana said the Hornets executive have shelved the Harare Mayor’s International Invitational Basketball Competition which was pencilled in for the last weekend of August.
