Professor Jonathan Moyo

Hebert Zharare Political Editor
Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo has appointed an 11-member board chaired by telecoms entrepreneur and ICT expert Dr Dennis Magaya (44) to spearhead restructuring and turnaround of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.

Prof Moyo dissolved the old board following revelations of fiduciary shortcomings that led to, among other issues, payment of mega packages to some executives and non-payment of salaries to ordinary staff for seven months in 2013.

Yesterday, Prof Moyo said the new board members were appointed to ensure ZBC had the right skills mix to make it commercially viable and technologically sound.

“Following the necessary consultations that started after the dissolution of the then board of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Services on 14 November 2013, the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services is pleased to announce that His Excellency the President, Cde R.G. Mugabe, has approved the appointment of a new 11-member ZBC board to assume its duties with immediate effect.

“Among other urgent tasks before it, the new ZBC board is expected, and indeed required, to restructure and turn around ZBC to ensure it has the right skills to make it commercially viable and technologically sound as a public broadcaster with a national mandate in light of the challenges of digital migration and the requirements of Zimbabwe’s new Constitution and informed by the outcome of the forensic and strategy audit of the ZBC that is about to be done by independent auditors under the auspices of the Comptroller and Auditor-General.

“Each and every member of the board has been appointed in their own right with the expectation that they will each and all constructively contribute to the wellbeing and success of the ZBC not as standalone or unaccountable individuals, but as organic parts of one dynamic collective, the ZBC board, whose members will support one another and work together driven by a common and unifying national broadcasting purpose,” he said.

Apart from chairman Dr Magaya, other board members are: Dr Ndabezinhle Dlodlo, Ms Phyllis Johnson, Mr Gelfand Kausiyo, Mr Donald Khumalo, Ms Joyce Jenje-Makwenda, Dr Charity Manyeruke, Ms Rudo Mudavanhu, Father Gibson Munyoro, Dr Cleopatra Matanhire-Mutisi and Mr Blessing Rugara.

They replace the Dr Cuthbert Dube-led board whose members were Mr Bob Nyabinde, Ms Doreen Sibanda, Mr Clemence Mabaso, Bishop Trevor Manhanga, Brigadier-General (Retired) Felix Muchemwa, Major-General Gibson Mashingaidze, Mr Farai Mutamangira, Mr Job Jonhera and Engineer Martin Manuhwa.
