National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) Manicaland has stepped up efforts to increase the amount of blood in its blood bank ahead of the festive season. Traditionally, there is a marked increase in traffic accidents during the Christmas and New Year Holidays, which pushes up demand for blood. NBSZ Mutare spokesperson Mr Nick Muparutsa said as part of efforts to satisfy this demand, NBSZ had officially launched the blood drive campaigns across the province and has been calling upon all residents to play a part in donating the life-saving liquid.

“We launched our festive season campaign, which started in November and is ending in January next year,” he said.
“We can safely say there is adequate blood in our stocks right now.”

Mr Muparutsa said as a result of the Rusape bus disaster and a number of road disasters occurring across the country the organisation has been forced to scale up its blood collection efforts.

He revealed that they had received overwhelming support from schools in previous drives and called upon “O” and “A” Level candidates who recently sat for their examinations to donate blood.
