Afro fusion artiste Tinashe Navonika, also known as Navygeta, has established a new recording stable called Navy Recordz in Malborough, Harare, that will assist upcoming artistes.

Speaking to The Herald Arts, Navonika said the main aim of the studio was to bring exciting sounds to Zimbabwe.

“Owning a studio has been a dream of mine ever since I discovered my passion for music,” Navonika said. “I got the motivation of opening the studio after visiting other studios and realising that it can actually be done.”

Navonika said since the grand opening of the studio, different artistes had been recording there. “Since the opening of the studio, we have had artistes like Maskiri, Bazooker, Van Choga, Tunga T (from maFriq), Wadiwa Music, Dancehall Kedha, Feli Nandi, Slikish from Ghana myself.”

Navonika said the studio was a start of great things, but as any business they were facing some challenges.

“I believe that by opening this studio, the music industry is headed for greater things and that I have contributed my own part to the industry,” he said.

“The biggest challenge we face mostly is marketing. Our team is still small, but we hope to recruit more hands so that we become a fully- fledged record label.”

Navonika urged corporates to collaborate with musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“As an artiste, and with the pandemic still ongoing, getting shows has become a challenge, of which this shows the problem with putting money on an artist’s table,” he said.

“I believe that the arts sector should have more virtual shows during times like these, collaborations within corporates and the artistes will also boost the sector in a great way. We also need to look at how the industry can  grow our GDP.”

Navonika said he was working on some new music which will be released before the end of this month.

“I am working on an EP called ‘Ndione’ that will be released in December, I have been working on this for a very long time,” he said.

“‘Ndione’ speaks of someone who wishes to see a little glimpes of their future, the current situation is disheartening so he wishes to see how his future will be like, with hopes that what lies ahead will be better.

“Working with other artistes was a good experience. You get to challenge yourself by singing with greats. Sometimes it’s surreal doing certain collaborations, meeting your idols at close range and getting to work together. You get to learn a lot and hear how others go about their musical journeys.”
