LLOYD Mutasa came close to shedding tears after leading his Eastern Region Division One Football League side GreenFuel to the Premiership.

The Chisumbanje-based side needed just a point to secure their promotion before a raucous GreenFuel Sports Arena against lowly Surrey.

And they did it in style after massacring the helpless Marondera team 5-0 on Saturday.

And Mutasa found his way into the exclusive company of only three coaches who have led at least three second-tier teams to the top-flight.

Interestingly, the former Dynamos coach, who has guided three teams to Premiership promotion, has achieved the feat with teams from the Eastern Region.

The former Tanganda, DeMbare and Warriors midfielder is the one who led the now-defunct sides Highway and Kiglon into the Premiership in 2007 and 2009 respectively.

Highway would give the country a tough midfielder who would captain the Warriors in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, Willard Katsande.

On the other hand, Mutasa moulded several stars at Kiglon, who would grow to write beautiful stories of their own in the Premiership.

It is Mutasa, who introduced to the world one of the best players ever to grace the local Premiership while at Kiglon – Denver Mukamba, the 2012 Soccer Star of the Year.

It is also Mutasa who introduced Devon Chafa to the top-flight fray at Kiglon as well.

Chafa, who is now playing for CAPS United, is the only player in the history of Zimbabwean top-tier to win seven league titles with three different clubs.

And there are several exciting youngsters at GreenFuel who will most likely illuminate the Premiership, especially goalkeeper Tadious Baye, who has so far kept a record 22 clean sheets.

The only other coaches who have led at least three teams to the Premiership are Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera, Bigboy Mawiwi and Arthur Tutani.

“It feels good to be in that exclusive company of top, top coaches. What excites me the most is the fact that having played for Tanganda in the Eastern Region, I am also propping up teams from this region,” said Mutasa.

“And being in the same ranks with those coaches who have achieved so much is something I am humbled about.

“I am happy for the team, for the management, for the supporters and for everyone associated with this team.

“This is the first time we have a team from Chipinge district playing in the Premier Soccer League.

“I am very happy to be the first coach to lead a team from this area to the top-flight.

“And to do so with four games to spare and without a defeat is something remarkable. I would like to thank God for that.”

Mutasa has an array of experienced players, including the ageless Obey Mwerehari, Leeroy Murape, Ishmael Lawe and Livingston Gent.

Gent, who has also seen action with different top-flight teams including FC Platinum, was elated as well.

“Returning into the Premier Soccer League with a team that has done so well is something we, as players, are happy about.

“But we would also want to end the season without defeat so at the moment, we still have a lot to do,” said Gent.
