RESIDENTS in Mutare Central constituency have hailed the ruling party for answering their calls by initiating community self-help projects in their area after being sidelined by the MDC-led council in the past. Zanu-PF has since started various projects, which include clean-up campaigns that will see those participating receiving food handouts in return.

The programmes, which residents say are being spearheaded by Zanu-PF provincial executive member, Cde Nancy Saungweme, are being undertaken in the constituency’s 10 wards.

Mutare Central Ward 5 chairperson, Cde John Sagero, said the introduction of the programmes would help a number of families.

Councillors who are in this constituency have been letting us down in most programmes since they are from opposition, he said.

We have families that need assistance, but were being left out in these food-for-work programmes, yet they needed to be involved too.

We sat down and approached our leaders here who also heard our plight. We started the programmes sometime last week and I have realised that they are benefiting a lot of people.

We started off by having clean-up campaigns where we are targeting recreational facilities and slashing grass along our streets. After this, we will move onto the roads where we want to fill potholes.

Mrs Evelyn Maunganidze of Ward 10 hailed the programmes, saying they were overdue.
She said she hoped that the programmes would continue throughout the year, saying it was one way of improving the livelihoods of less privileged families in Mutare Central constituency.

“This is a very noble idea and this is one way the less privileged families can be assisted,” she said.
“It is also another way of keeping our area clean because if these programmes are sustained, the community can clean up its area.

“We are all aware that the city council has been failing in service delivery and this is one way we can take the responsibility as a community.”

A 23-year old man from Ward 3, who only identified himself as Justice, also hailed the programmes, saying they kept youths away from the streets.

“This will not only help us spruce up our area, but also keep youths occupied. They will be drawn away from criminal activities and other bad habits,” he said.
Cde Saungweme confirmed her involvement in the programme.

“I have been working closely with people from Mutare Central for a very long time,” she said. “They came and asked if I could assist them since they were being left out in programmes that were being undertaken by some councillors.
“I saw it befitting and engaged them. They have organised themselves into groups and I am only there to coordinate.”
