And when it comes to flaunting their stuff the musicians use every opportunity to show how much they are worth. The recent Heroesplush was one such platform where performing artistes showed their “bling bling”.
In a survey, The Herald came up with a top 10 list of some of the Zimbabwean musicians who flaunted their riches at the gala in Mount Darwin.
The survey was largely inspired by the cars they drove at the music extravaganza and not so much about the net value of their assets.
1) Energy Mutodi
You can’t ignore this guy although he has just started out a career in music, he is one of the few successful musicians who double up as serious a businessman.
Of course, he is chief executive of the Housing Development Trust of Zimbabwe and that explains why he wants to show and do it well all the time. Mutodi, who has been nicknamed “Tatu Muluba” by his fans, emerged from his Black Land Cruiser V8 which earned him pole position.
2) Suluman Chimbetu
The Orchestra Dendera Kings leader is no pushover. Sulu, in short, is one artiste with expensive tastes as seen by the way he dresses on and off the stage. He was driving his new silver Jeep Cherokee and landed at number two. Those in the know say Sulu is making more dollars not in music but at the farm in Chegutu.
3) Tanga WekwaSando
Musically, he’s achieved a lot but he remains level-headed. He is also a businessman of sorts including owning his record label – Hakuna Matata – but Tanga as his fans lovingly call him, is no ordinary musician besides his standout compositions, the “Paida Moyo” singer is an academic by profession. Currently, he is running a BBQ hangout called PaFio Arts Centre in Highfield, which is becoming popular by the day. His spanking new Mercedes- Benz E240 puts him in third place.
4) Sniper Storm
The reggae/dancehall chanter is riding high with his latest album called “Salute The General”. Sniper, who is not a fulltime musician, earns more money from his full-time job elsewhere. He was seen driving a silver Land Rover Freelander.
5) Nicolas Zakaria
If there is any musician who has achieved a lot, musically that is, it has to be the Senior Lecturer. However, his efforts paid off when his record label decided to honour him with a Mazda BT50 twin cab, which he is still using these days. He is at number five.
6) Charles and Olivia Charamba
The couple came in a Nissan Elgrand. Word doing the rounds is that Charles Charamba’s latest album “Pashoko Pangoma” performed poorly on the market such that the gospel singer vented his anger on piracy. Well, with bookings coming his way Charamba, who now owns a recording studio, still got cash to splash on his rides. He is at number six.
7) Amos Mahendere
The singer-cum-muscle man is enjoying the success of producing such groups as Mbare Chimurenga Choir. The Mahendere brothers’ leader is doing well in other circles outside music notably his collaboration on the production of Mbare Chimurenga Music Choir. He was sported driving a Toyota Mark II.
8) Alick Macheso
The “Madhawu” singer is an easygoing artiste whose taste is oddly enough, too cheap. For someone who owns a house in Waterfalls and still prefers to stay in Chitungwiza it really says a lot about his character. Despite being the drawcard at the gala, Macheso arrived in Mt Darwin driving a Honda CRV while the rest of his band members were in a Toyota Hiace. When it comes to cars, Macheso doesn’t spend much more since he has not one but two wives to look after.
9) Somandla Ndebele
Some people know him as “Mafia” not because he is a gang leader for organised crime but because he knows how to use his brains. For as far as I can remember, Soma in short has been changing cars like clothes. He loves his cars and at the gala he was seen driving a Nissan Bassara.
10) Tongai Moyo
To complete the top 10 is Dhewa who after losing his new BT50 to a freak accident a couple of years back, has managed to keep up his appearances here and there. Maybe when he has made much money he will buy himself a top-of-range whip that matches his superstar status. He was driving a Nissan Prestige.
