A murder suspect wanted in South Africa for killing two people has been arrested in Beitbridge after he was found in possession of stolen goods.

Tawanda Simango (28) was arrested after he entered into the country through an illegal crossing point.

He is still assisting police with investigations and the ZRP has since notified their South African counterparts.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest.

“On May 22, 2022, police in Beitbridge arrested Tawanda Simango aged 28 for unlawful possession of ammunition. The suspect was intercepted at the Chikwalakwala area while trying to cross the border through an undesignated entry point.

“Searches were conducted and one round of a star pistol, a three-star okapi knife, a star screwdriver, a small torch, black TCM double binoculars, seven smartphones, two umbrellas, a Nike watch, a pair of green gloves, two black wallets, and two satchels containing various clothes were recovered from the suspect,” he said.

Asst Comm Nyathi said further investigations revealed that the suspect is a wanted person in South Africa where he murdered two victims before robbing them of their valuables.

In one of the incidents, the suspect allegedly raped the victim’s wife.

Meanwhile, police in Nkayi are investigating a case of murder that occurred at Jumbers Mine in Inyathi where an illegal artisanal miner identified as Mikel Moyo stabbed to death Busani Dube (30) with an okapi knife once on the thigh.

“The duo who were panning for gold in an underground horizontal shaft, had an argument after the victim allegedly extracted soils supporting the underground shaft pillar. The suspect is on the run. Anyone with information to contact any nearest Police Station,” Asst Comm Nyathi said.
