A Chitungwiza man who allegedly murdered a taxi driver in cold blood in Gweru before driving off with his Honda Fit vehicle appeared before a Gweru court last week. Calton Chido Magadu (26) of house number 49, Tsoka Road, Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza, appeared before Gweru magistrate Ms Mildred Matuvi charged with murder.

He was remanded in custody to April 19.
Ms Matuvi advised Magadu to apply for bail at the High Court.

It is the State’s case that on March 26, Magadu hired Garikai Mashame from Gweru’s central business district purporting to be going to Mkoba 6 Business Centre.

The court heard that when they arrived at the agreed destination, Magadu lured Mashame to proceed to Mkoba 3, where he claimed he wanted to pick up his relatives.

It is alleged that when the two got to Mkoba 3, they both disembarked from the vehicle.
It is believed that Magadu later tried to drive off, but Mashame allegedly pulled him out of the taxi.
A scuffle ensued and Magadu allegedly stabbed Mashame three times with an Okapi knife on the neck and chest before ripping open his stomach.

Mashame, who was bleeding profusely, reportedly walked about 100 metres from the scene before collapsing.
He was later discovered by a passer-by who then called an ambulance, but was pronounced dead on arrival at Gweru Provincial Hospital.

At the time, Magadu is understood to have already driven off with Mashame’s car.
He later dumped it at Gweru Main Street Bar after it ran out of fuel.
But on March 3, he was arrested after surrendering himself to the police.
Ms Hellen Khosa appeared for the State.
