RURAL schools maintained their stranglehold against their urban counterparts with Murambinda B School of Buhera District, Manicaland, coming second at the 2018 National Primary Schools Heritage Quiz Competitions held in Masvingo last weekend.

Mutare Museum heritage education officer Mr Kainos Mukonavanhu said he was pleased to announce the progress made by schools in Manicaland by making their mark in national competitions.

“Chancellor Primary School and Mutare Junior School have jointly held the national record of winning the national competitions four times. Over the past few years there has, however, been a shift in the balance of power with the emergence of new powerhouses such as Murambinda B and Mt Mellery, which are doing the region proud as far as the primary schools’ quiz competitions are concerned,” said Mr Mukonavanhu.

Mr Mukonavanhu said he was also pleased with how rural schools from the Eastern Region were performing noting that Murambinda B Primary School was the only rural school competing against urban quiz giants at this year’s finals.

“I would like to congratulate Cecil John Rhodes for taking the trophy this year once again, but would also like to express how proud I am that a rural school from Manicaland managed to upstage urban schools’ quiz giants. Their performance at the nationals was quite impressive and would like to congratulate them as well,” he said

The tightly-contested event saw the Gweru-based school, Cecil John Rhodes taking first position garnering 48 points, while the eastern region’s provincial representative Murambinda B collected 42 points while Chipindura Primary from Bindura settled for third position after accumulating 40 points.

The Heritage Quiz Competition is the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe’s (NMMZ) annual flagship event for primary schools.

“We are investing in the young to promote domestic tourism through the hosting of these annual quiz competitions. They are taken around heritage sites in preparation for the quiz competitions and this in turn conscientises them on the existence and preservation of heritage sites around the country,” said Mr Mukonavanhu.

Five finalist schools from the five museum regions of the country participated in the finals.

Winners walked away with trophies, cash prizes and stationery.
