Students from the Midlands State University’s Department of Sociology have embarked on a campaign to help unprivileged girls in society through advocating for a healthy and safe environment.

The MSU Sociology Society’s secretary-general, Mr Sifelumusa Shumba, said their campaign is running under the theme, #Mwanasikana, Intombi Enhle, We Ke (Girl child, we care for you).

“The Mwanasikana campaign is a platform to remind or inform the girl child that the society cares for her. We want her to be aware of her social freedom.

“We want to create an environment which is conducive for learning and prevents sexual harassment, drug abuse, early child marriages and abortion as well as fight against AIDS infections as well as helping those that live with disabilities,” he said.

Mr Shumba said they were starting with the sanitary wear campaign that aims to help girls, who are struggling to get sanitary wear due to high costs.

“A snap survey we did three weeks ago revealed that female students and other girls from surrounding community, places like Nehosho and Senga are using cloths and other unhygienic materials which may endanger their health that is the gap we are trying to cover.

“The campaign seeks to reach out to vulnerable girls with the support of our Midlands State University (MSU) Community and outside by donating sanitary wear for them,

“The campaign will, however, cover areas like Lower Gweru and Shurugwi, but this will depend on the quantities of sanitary wear we would have secured.”

He also said the campaign is vital as it will allow female students to continue attending classes during their menstrual cycles.

Mr Shumba said they are collecting donations from members of society and distribution will be done at the end of this month.
