MR Pace Athletics Club chairperson Collen Makaza says he is hopeful they can go ahead with their planned half-marathon in Chitungwiza next month.

After successfully hosting the Mr Pace Track and Field Championships early last month at the National Sports Stadium, Makaza said they are looking at hosting their inaugural Mr Pace Chitungwiza Half-marathon on July 25.

The race is on the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe’s calendar.

“This will be our second event this year. For this race we have some people who have expressed their interest to sponsor the race.

“We were supposed to sign a mutual agreement but we had a meeting last week and we agreed to wait until the end of this month as we also monitor the situation in terms of Covid-19. But we are still hopeful we can host the race,” said Makaza.

Makaza, a long distance runner and is also into coaching said as a club, they would want to create a competitive environment that pushes athletes to keep improving their times.

“We want to create competition that is not just for fun run but a scenario where we have pacesetters and athletes go out to get very competitive times.

“We want athletes to target good times when they go out to compete because it’s now all about times in this world,” said Makaza.

Athletics is classified as low risk sport and is among sport codes cleared to continue with their activities under the Covid-19 regulations.
