Most rural roads in Mashonaland West now passable

At least 70 percent of rural roads in Mashonaland West province are now passable, with the District Development Fund (DDF) turning to repairing damaged bridges before the rains.

Rehabilitation of the roads, which has come to fruition through Government funds released to the DDF, has also taken shape in all the districts as councils continue to receive funding under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERRP2).

DDF provincial head, Mr Erikana Chikande, said the target was to ensure that roads were passable to improve responses to Covid-19, delivery of medication to clinics in remote areas and movement of grain and inputs.

“Generally, our roads are now passable as we started off with heavily affected areas and I am to report that all roads are now passable although work is still ongoing,” he said.

“We, however, have major bridges which we have not attended to, but will be repaired in the third and fourth phases because of the heavy funds injection that is required.”

Some of the badly affected bridges in the province are Negande, Maremberera and Piriviri in Hurungwe and Kariba districts.

“The target is to work on the roads before the onset of the rains that are believed to be normal to above normal this coming season so that movement of both grains and inputs is not hampered,” said Mr Chikande.
