GOVERNMENT has called on dairy farmers to capitalise on the growing demand for their products countrywide to modernise and expand operations for increased production and productivity.

Addressing farmers and delegates during a dairy field day in Umzingwane recently, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development permanent secretary Professor Obert Jiri said there was need to improve on milk quality and production efficiencies to enhance the sector’s competitiveness in an increasingly challenging market.

“There is a significant need to improve feeding strategies and embrace technological advancements,” said Prof Jiri.

Integrating modern technology can streamline operations, monitor animal well-being and increase overall efficiency in dairy farming.

“Through adoption of these innovations, farmers can better meet the rising demand for high-quality dairy products while ensuring sustainable practices in their operations,” observed Prof Jiri.

By focusing on improving quality in breeding, nutrition and milking practices, dairy producers  will not only satisfy consumer preferences but also differentiate themselves in a crowded market.

Prof Jiri’s call to action aligns with the dairy industry’s commitment to modernising and enhancing its practices, as by coordinating initiatives with the Government’s vision, the sector can play a significant role in advancing the country’s broader economic development objectives while establishing itself as a dependable supplier of high-quality dairy products.

“Improving milk production is a well-established method for improving livelihoods and fostering economic empowerment, which can ultimately transform agriculture and bolster its contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP),” explained Prof Jiri.

The call comes on the backdrop of Government targeting to increase milk production to 120 million litres by 2025, building on last year’s record output of 100 million litres.

“By ensuring a reliable supply of dairy products, farmers play a critical part in improving dietary diversity and health outcomes in the country,” said Prof Jiri.

The country’s dairy industry has been experiencing significant growth in response to various Government led initiatives, which addressed plaguing issues such as genetic improvement, disease resilience and feed availability.

“We have several Government initiatives to mitigate drought impacts that include supplementary feeding programme and improving water supplies to safeguard the national dairy herd from drought induced poverty deaths,” said Prof Jiri.

He also applauded the dedication of local farmers to keep going amid the challenges posed by climate change, particularly the ongoing El Niño-induced drought.

Government is also implementing the blitz-tick grease programme to protect livestock from tick-borne diseases, which can severely affect milk production and farmers’ incomes.
