South Africa-based Zimbabwean designer Richmond Mlambo has launched a new label dubbed “Chasers” which is already selling online.

Mlambo whose range of clothing include T-shirts, tracksuits, caps and hoodies, said the designs are mainly inspired by United States music rapper Kanye West.

In an interview, the former Mutare Boys High student said he came up with the concept following his passion for sneakers, and the realisation that he needed to wear them with appropriate apparel.

“My love for sneakers made me start designing and making my own clothes because I often had challenges looking for clothes that would match my sneakers,” he said.

Although he initially thought of keeping the label to himself, Mlambo eventually launched it due to public demand.

“My clothing label was only based in South Africa and with the overwhelming response I got from friends and fashionistas, I decided to launch and open a new branch in Zimbabwe as well. We successfully launched our season, where I worked with some of the reputable local models on launch photo-shoots,” he said.

Mlambo has since partnered with a media marketing company called ‘Sold’ that has created an online store where one can purchase the apparel.

“The merchandise can be bought online and at Veritas shop. I am happy with how some local corporates are embracing fashion as this will develop the industry. I am working on hosting a fashion show to market more merchandise,” he said.

Mlambo cited lack of exposure as a major hindrance to the growth of the clothing industry in Zimbabwe.

“I have heard a lot of fashion shows are taking place and I urge organisers to invite us to participate or have open platforms which we can apply rather recycle designers.

“We have talented and unheralded designers who, given a chance can change the world. Again customers and general public should also take our business serious because this can sustain livelihoods,” he said.
