MDC-T violence spreads to Mash Central

MDC-T Mashonaland Central provincial chairperson Mr Godfrey Chimombe’s shop in Bindura was petrol-bombed yesterday morning as infighting within the party escalates.
Four petrol bombs were thrown inside Mr Chimombe’s Sanyika Investments at Nyahwa Business Centre, resulting in some groceries being destroyed.

The incident comes after MDC-T secretary-general Mr Tendai Biti’s Umwinsdale home in Harare was petrol-bombed recently by unknown people in an attack many believe could be linked to infighting in the party.

This was the second time such an attack has been carried out on Mr Biti’s property and it came barely two weeks after he and youth leader Mr Solomon Madzore narrowly escaped a beating at the hands of a mob outside the party’s headquarters in Harare. Not so fortunate were MDC-T deputy treasurer-general  Mr Elton Mangoma and another youth leader Mr Promise Mkwananzi who were assaulted by the same mob while party leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai watched. Mr Mangoma has called for Mr Tsvangirai to step down and it is believed he is supported in this by Mr Biti and a host of other party executives.

Sources said Mr Chimombe is reportedly affiliated to Mr Biti and Mr Mangoma’s faction.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday confirmed the incident.
