Harare Mayor Cllr Herbert Gomba has commended corporates for responding positively to a call by council to donate towards Cyclone Idai.

He said this in an interview after receiving an assortment of goods ranging from kitchen utensils, mealie-meal, foodstuffs, blankets and other non-food materials.

He said these generous handouts would go a long way in alleviating the livelihoods of the Cyclone Idai victims.

“The spirit of giving has always been part of our African culture. We all know the disaster which happened in Manicaland — in Chimanimani and Chipinge areas — where many lost their lives and thousands are homeless.

“This is a touching issue to all of us and I would like to thank members of the society for the spirit of giving they are showing and this is much cherished.

“The goods are going to be transported today to Chimanimani. This is the third or fourth time we are sending donations. We have also donated RTGS $30 000, tippers for road rehabilitation in addition to goods that have come from our members. This will help them to have a start in life as many have been left with nothing. We are still accepting the donations from the community and when they (reach a certain level) we will send them to their intended beneficiaries,” said Mayor Gomba.

Food World, Girls High School and Mashwede Tours and individuals from the City of Harare made the donations.
