Masvingo City has launched this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund with a cocktail of activities primed to raise more than US$5 000 to donate towards the plight of underprivileged members of the community in the ancient city.

This year’s launch saw the city hosting a golf tournament at Masvingo Sports Club where golf enthusiasts from within and without the city participated with proceeds being channelled towards the Fund.

Prior to the golf tournament, a fundraising dinner was held at a city hotel where corporates and individuals from the city made donations in cash and kind towards helping the underprivileged.

Mayor Councillor Aleck Tabe says the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund sought to raise material and financial resources to bring cheer to the faces of the underprivileged during the festive season. Councillor Tabe also challenged the Masvingo business community and individuals to stand up and answer to the plight of the underprivileged.

Traditionally the bulk of the proceeds from the Masvingo Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund have been donated to Alpha Cottages which houses orphans in the city and Mucheke Old People’s Home where homeless old people are domiciled.
