The remains of six unknown soldiers were this week reburied at the Mt Darwin District Heroes Acre in line with the Second Republic’s commitment to honouring and preserving the history and memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s liberation.
The reburial follows the exhumation of the remains of the unknown soldiers from various places in Mt Darwin, Rushinga and Shamva.
Fallen Heroes Trust of Zimbabwe spearheaded the exhumation.
The Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs and Devolution, retired Captain Christopher Magomo presided over the interment of the bodies.
“These districts hold a special place in the liberation history of our country,” he said.
“It was predominantly along our border communities where the war of liberation was fiercely fought, and to this day we continue to appreciate the role these districts continue to play.
“Commemorating Heroes and Defense Forces Days this month while also conducting this reburial program is a meaningful confluence of events.
“This annual observance honours the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for the nation. It allows us to holistically pay tribute to those who have defended our country and made the ultimate sacrifice.”
