Police have arrested two suspected fraudsters after they attempted to defraud a man of US$18 000 in exchange for R280 000 in Bulawayo, while a Rushinga man has been arrested for breaking into a school and stealing three desks.

The two suspects had duped the victim into believing that they could provide him with the money he wanted, but they failed to do so.

A report was then made to the police, leading to their arrest and the recovery of the stolen money.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident yesterday.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns the public against engaging in dubious monetary transactions,” he said.

“This comes after a man aged 36 lost US$18 000 to two suspects after a botched money exchange deal in which he intended to change his cash into R280 000.

“However, police have since arrested the suspects and recovered the stolen cash.”

Meanwhile, police in Rushinga have arrested a suspected housebreaker, Cloud Samuel (22) on allegations or breaking into Muhiti Government School and stealing three desks in January this year while in the company of his two other accomplices who are still at large.

The matter came to light after the suspect approached a carpenter intending to break one of the desks to make a pushing tray.

He was arrested after a report was made to the police.

“On August 31, 2021, police in Rushinga arrested Cloud Samuel for a case of unlawful entry and theft which occurred sometime in January 2020, where the suspect together with two other accomplices, who are still at large, unlawfully entered into a classroom at Muhiti Government School and stole three desks,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

“The matter came to light after the suspect approached a carpenter intending to break one of the desks to make a pushing tray.”

Police in Chegutu have also arrested Leon Shonhai (27) in connection with a robbery case which occurred at Pickstone Mine on Monday.

It is alleged that Shonhai, together with his accomplice who is still at large, robbed a man of his Honda Fit, two leather jackets and US$130 cash.

They later abandoned the car after ramming a tree at the 28km peg along the Chegutu-Mubaira Road.

Investigations carried out led to the arrest of Shonhai who was yesterday still assisting the police with investigations.
