A man from Lower Gweru will spend the next three years in jail for assaulting his friend with a log several times on the head for spilling his beer.

Emmanuel Gonorenda (33) of Kusile Village, Chief Bunina, Lower Gweru appeared before Gweru magistrate Mrs Mildred Matuvi last Friday on an attempted murder charge.

He pleaded not guilty, but Mrs Matuvi convicted and sentenced him to three years in jail.

In passing the sentence, Magistrate Matuvi said the rate of violence was increasing and the sentence would send a clear message to those who use violence and dangerous weapons to settle scores to desist from using such methods.

“People should not use weapon in solving disputes and should always try to avoid violence. Cases of people assaulting each other using weapons usually result in deaths,” she said.

The court heard that on February 21 this year Gonorenda was drinking beer with the complainant Evans Sibanda at Kwakwethu Bottle Store.

The court heard that Sibanda spilled Gonorenda’s beer by mistake and he apologised but the accused would have none of it.

A misunderstanding arose between the two and they started pushing and shoving each other.

Gonorenda then became violent, grabbed a log and started assaulting the complainant with it several times on the head.
