A 37-year-old mentally-challenged Gokwe man on Tuesday fatally axed his brother and father who were trying to restrain him from destroying property at their in-laws’ homestead. Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmannuel Mahoko confirmed the incident, saying investigations were in progress.

“We received a report following the death of Sesaba Mujori (35) and Phenias Mujori (60) of Muzoziwa Village under Chief Mukoka who died after being axed by Reason Mujori whom they were trying to restrain from destroying property at their in-laws’ homestead as he was running amok,” he said.

“We have since arrested Reason who is in custody assisting us with investigations.”
It is alleged that on the fateful day at around 2pm, Reason started running amok and grabbed a hoe and proceeded to his younger brother’s in-laws’ homestead where he allegedly entered the bedroom and started destroying property.

Police reports indicate that at the same time Phenias and Sesaba decided to follow him at their in-laws’ homestead where they found him busy destroying everything in the room.

It is alleged that Phenias and Sesaba tried to restrain Reason from damaging property, but he grabbed an axe and struck Phenias on the forehead and Sesaba on the head using the same axe.

It is reported that neighbouring villagers tried to restrain him but the efforts were in vain.
Reason continued assaulting the two with the axe until they died on the spot.

After noticing that he had killed Sesaba and Phenias, Reason fled from the scene.
A report was made at Gokwe police station and a manhunt was launched leading to Reason’s arrest.
The bodies of Sesaba and Phenias were taken to Gokwe Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
