SPRINTER Ngoni Makusha says he is motivated to keep on pushing towards qualification for the Olympics after posting some encouraging times in his last competition, at the All-Comers Meet in Zambia recently.

Makusha is continuing with his preparations for other upcoming qualifying events at a High Performance Centre, in South Africa. He posted a time of 20.56 seconds in the 200m event and 10.28 seconds in the 100m race.

“This was a huge improvement considering I ran my third fastest 200m there. I am so happy with it. Definitely they are not bad times, I just need to work on a few things to lower the times.

“Well I have the qualifying times in me, I just need to find one perfect race where I execute properly and it will come. I will be continuing with my camp this side (in South Africa).

“There’s the World Relays coming up from May 1 to 2, then I might go and race in Zambia again in May,” said Makusha.
The qualifying time for men in 100m is 10.05 seconds and 20.24 for 200m.

Makusha is one of the locally-based athletes the national association are pinning their hopes on to make the cut for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games moved to this year.
The Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director for coaching, talent identification and development, Lisimati Phakamile early this week also expressed confidence in the sprinter.

“If you are to look at Ngoni, he did 10.28 seconds of which is his season’s best and he also did a very good time for 200m which also came out to be the season’s best time.

“So considering that we are work in progress and the coaches are actually working tirelessly they need more races for the athletes to fine tune their act. We are actually work in progress and we are on a good course as a country,” said Phakamile.
