Government is set to establish a magistrates’ court and a prison at Murombedzi Business Centre following a public request for the facilities in Zvimba District.

Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs spokesperson Mr Livingstone Mashange confirmed the development, saying it was now work in progress.

“The ministry will see to it that a court is first established at the centre before the construction of a prison. We cannot, however, say when the court will be established as it is work in progress that requires a lot of players,” he said.

Mr Mashange said Government would also establish offices of the Messenger of Court in the district. The ministry recently held a successful outreach programme at Murombedzi Business Centre, where traditional leaders and villagers pleaded with Government to consider establishing a court and a prison in the area. The magistrates from Chinhoyi hold regular court sittings on particular days while prisoners are transferred to Chinhoyi Prison for incarceration.

During the outreach programme, Chief Chirau castigated Government for neglecting the affairs of traditional courts presided over by chiefs and headmen, who play a pivotal role in promoting peace and tolerance in their areas of jurisdiction.
