Madrid press mock Guardiola Pep Guardiola

MADRID. — The Madrid press are revelling in Pep Guardiola’s side’s exit in the Champions League to Tottenham on Wednesday. The ex-Barcelona boss saw his Manchester City side crash out in the quarter-finals after a 4-3 thriller at the Etihad.

Spanish paper Marca said: ”The club has spent £500 million on signings. The result has been two eliminations in the Champions quarters and one in the second round.’

Spanish newspaper Sport said farewell to City as they failed to make the last four of the competition.
Guardiola’s side were knocked out in the Champions League quarter-finals last season by Liverpool and Monaco in the last 16 in the City manager’s first season.

The English press also hammered Guardiola after their exit on Wednesday night.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards said: “He has had three chances and he has never made it to the quarter-finals with City, that ugly cross will chase him and torment him’.

Daily Mirror’s Andy Dunn said: “It is not surprising that Pep Guardiola often has the look of a man who can not wait to leave his job.”

The Sun’s David Kidd added: “If Guardiola made a serious mistake, it was when he decided not to line up Kevin de Bruyne in the first leg.’

In Italy, the old groaners are being dismissive of English football — “quaint chaotic teams who can’t defend, bless ‘em” whereas the younger journalists and fans just enjoyed the spectacle.

Gazzetta Dello Sport went with the headline: “Guardiola and the curse Champions. After Barca, only disappointments”.
Sadly for City and Guardiola, exiting the Champions League perhaps earlier than they should has become something of a habit. — Mailonline.
