A third year Bio-Technology student at Midlands State University died after being struck by lightning in Chegutu on Wednesday. Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident, which occurred around 1730hrs when Thelma Mbendhle (23) who was on a work related learning programme in Chegutu was struck by lightning while on her way home.

“I can confirm that an MSU student Thelma Mbendhle (23) was struck by lightning while walking with her friend Tsitsi Mapfumo (22) along a footpath near ZMDC in Chegutu,” he said.

“The bolt of lightning struck the duo and they fell unconscious at about 1730hrs. They were found by a local councillor Mr Henry Muchatibaya who rushed them to Chegutu District Hospital. Unfortunately, Mbendhle passed on.”

Insp Mabgweazara said Mbendhle was suspected to have been severely injured.

“It is suspected that the lighting was triggered by the cellphone, which was in her bra resulting in the untimely death,” said Insp Mabgweazara.

He said Mapfumo sustained minor injuries and was still admitted at Chegutu District Hospital.

“Mapfumo had burns on both legs and is still receiving treatment,” said Insp Mabgweazara.
