Government has been challenged to build more secondary schools in Zvishavane amid concern that there was a large deficit compared to the number of primary schools in the district.

Zvishavane-Ngezi Member of Parliament Cde John Holder bemoaned the shortage of secondary school places in the district and called for Government to act. He was speaking recently on the sidelines of the official opening of a new school, George Chipadza Secondary School in Zvishavane town’s Makwasha suburb.

“There are more primary schools and less secondary schools in Zvishavane District, so we want Government to continue establishing more secondary schools.

“We want a situation where primary school graduates will easily get a place at a secondary school, which is not the case at the moment because parents are toiling to secure secondary school places for their children,’’ said Cde Holder.

The legislator decried the issue of hot sitting at most secondary schools in the district, saying the situation needs urgent redress.

“I think the ratio is four primary schools per secondary school in the district at the moment because there are too many primary schools around Zvishavane but then there are no secondary schools that will accommodate some of the students upon graduation,’’ he said.
