Lack of funds cripples bridge construction Minister Dinha

DISTRICT Development Fund has appealed to Government to avail funds for the Karanda Bridge Project to enable them to finish construction before the next rainy season.

DDF provincial coordinator for Mashonaland Central Mr Kenny Clement Mutombo said they had so far received $380 000 towards the project which is now 64 percent complete.

He also requested Government to avail funds for the tarring of the 15 kilometres of gravel road from Nyakasikana turn-off to Karanda Mission Hospital, the shortest route to the hospital.

“We were allocated $3 million for the bridge and road formation. We are almost through with the bridge and the biggest job left is road formation. So far our expenditure is $380 00,” said Mr Mutombo.

“A huge amount of our budget will go towards road formation. We are expecting to construct five culvert that will allow water to flow under the road. We are hoping to receive funds in time so that we will complete the bridge before October. We only need three weeks to complete the bridge.

“The bridge was started on October 7, last year and our target is to complete it by October 31, if resources are availed on time. The bridge is 160 meters long and it is the first longest bridge in the province. This route is 44km to the hospital compared 60km for the Mt Darwin-Mudzengerere and the 62km from Mt Darwin–Nhoro turn off routes.”

Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs, Advocate Martin Dinha, last week toured the bridge and assured DDF that funds for the project will be availed.

“This is the biggest project in the province. People were not believing that the bridge is under construction and even the hospital was not aware of the bridge that benefits them.

“I am confident that the funds for these projects will be availed. These are priority projects which must be complete before the onset of the rainy season.

“Vice President Kembo Mohadi was supposed to visit the bridge when he visited the province recently, but we will invite him to tour the project as well as the Shamva Road. President Mnangagwa will officially open the bridge in October after winning the elections,” said Adv Dinha.
