Kwekwe seeks to hike rates

Freedom Mupanedemo Midlands Bureau
The cash-strapped Kwekwe City Council is proposing to hike its water and sewer charges 100 percent.

The local authority is set to start the 2019 budget consultations this week.

According to a circular from the council, both residents and industry will have to fork more in order to bail out the financially-rippled local authority if the proposed budget is passed.

Residents in high-density suburbs such as Mbizo and Amaveni are paying at least $9 as fixed charge every month before other cumulative water and sewer charges are factored in.

The residents, however, will pay between $15 and $19 as the fixed charge according to the 2019 budget proposal.

In the new tariff schedule, Kwekwe City Council is proposing to increase refuse collection charges from the current $2 to $3 for those in the high density suburbs, while those from the low density suburbs would be expected to part with $5 up from $2.
