A 48-year-old commuter omnibus driver who hit a primary school pupil, who was walking home from school in the company of her mother in Chitungwiza, was yesterday slapped with a six-month prison term.

Kennedy Mauye of Kuwadzana Extension, Harare, was also banned from driving classes 2, 4 and 5 for life by Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo.

Mauye was slapped with 10 months in prison with four months set aside for five years after pleading guilty to charges of negligent driving.

Prosecutor Mr Tatenda Mukatera proved that at around 1pm on November 13, Mauye was driving a Toyota Hiace with registration number ACL 0218 along the Chitungwiza Road.

She was in the company of her mother when tragedy struck. The court heard that Mauye hit the minor with his bumper and she fell down. After the accident, Mauye failed to stop and proceeded with the journey.

However, he ran out of lucky after Southerton Traffic police gave chase.
