Kombi crew kidnaps, rapes passenger

A 39-year-old Harare man who allegedly teamed up with a kombi crew to kidnap and rape a passenger they picked up in town last week has appeared in court.

Jealous Kaseke appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with rape and kidnapping.

He was remanded in custody to September 2 and was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

It is alleged that on July 30 this year at around 8:15pm, the complainant (name withheld) was looking for transport at the corner of Chinhoyi Street and Jason Moyo Avenue when a kombi arrived.

The conductor stated that he was going to Warren Park.

It is alleged that one of the accused persons boarded the commuter omnibus together with the complainant and on their way to Warren Park near Zanu-PF Headquarters, the driver who was still at large diverted the route towards Epworth, alleging that he was going for refuelling.

The court heard that the complainant’s mobile phone rang and when she was about to answer the phone, one of the accused took it away.

It is alleged that the phone rang again and one of the accused persons gave her the phone and ordered her to tell the caller that she was going to Epworth only.

While at Chihota turn off, the complainant was ordered to disembark from the vehicle and seven of the accused persons also disembarked to block her from seeing the commuter omnibus’ registration number.

The commuter omnibus left and six other accused persons left, leaving the complainant with Kaseke, who ordered her to remove her sim card from her mobile phone.

The court heard that Kaseke ordered her to remove her clothes before raping her.

After committing the offence, it is alleged that Kaseke gave the woman $1,30 for transport.

The court heard that on August 17 the woman positively identified Kaseke, leading to his arrest.
