Kenya hold excellent talks with FIFA on impasse

NAIROBI. — Kenyan Sports Minister, Amina Mohamed, says she has held excellent consultative talks with FIFA secretary-general Fatma Samoura on the football impasse in the country.

Amina described the virtual meeting as an “excellent consultative meeting between the Kenyan Government and FIFA Secretary-General Fatma Samoura.

“All GOK (Government Of Kenya) decisions on football management remain in place and intact.

“Next meeting to be held in a week,” Amina said.

The decisions, which remain intact, include the suspension of the Football Kenya Federation board and the appointment of a caretaker leadership.

The meeting came on the day embattled FKF boss Nick Mwendwa’s bail terms were yesterday extended for seven days pending a formal charge by the state.

The DCI detectives last week arrested Mwendwa and arraigned him before resident magistrate Wandia Nyamu and sought to detain him for 14 days to complete investigations.

The state said the suspect had to be detained so that he does not interfere with investigations.

But Nyamu released Mwendwa said the 14-day detention was now necessary but the ousted FKF boss would still have to abide by all the conditions.

He has been directed not to contact any KFK employees, attend any football related matters or speak to the media.

Mwendwa was also directed not to access his office.

The magistrate yesterday extended the orders for seven days and asked the state to formally charge Mwendwa within that period failing which the file will stand closed.

“I agree with the respondent’s counsel that the state has not demonstrated compelling reasons to continue holding the respondent.

“I also find that the state acted not in good faith when police arrested the suspect,” the magistrate said.

She said detectives were free to summon Mwendwa to help in their investigations whenever they so wish.

Mwendwa’s fall from grace began on Thursday last week when Sports Minister Mohamed disbanded FKF and appointed a caretaker committee headed by retired Judge Aaron Ringera to lead the federation for six months.

He was arrested on Friday and spent the weekend in custody before being brought to court. — The Star/The Standard
