JUST IN: Lockdown compliance heeded in Harare Most streets of Harare were virtually empty by 4pm today

There is low activity in the Central Business District (CBD) of Harare today as the public took heed of Government’s call to stay at home during this lockdown period.

President Mnangagwa yesterday called on non-working people to stay at home and only move for essentials such as when buying food, find water or for medical reasons.

People were advised to wear masks outside of homes; everyone screened entering public places and buildings; social distancing observed; public transport passengers screened and sanitised on boarding with buses disinfected between round trips while the intercity movement remained banned.

These measures are meant to curb the spread of Covid 19 which has been prevalent worldwide.

A survey conducted by The Herald around the capital city today revealed that there is a notable decline of public movement in the CBD.

There was however a notable number of people buying groceries at some major supermarkets as people were stocking up on food supplies.

“We need to stay indoors as was directed by the President. That is why I am stocking up on my groceries. It is safe to stay indoors and everyone should do the same. Covid 19 has proven to be disastrous and every measure should be followed,” said one woman who only identified herself as Mrs Moyana of Harare.

The situation was different at most hiking spots along major roads which go in and out of Harare. Travellers were seen milling along the roads trying to secure transport to various destinations out of Harare.

Hitch hikers along Bindura Road said they wanted to be at their homes before 6 pm when the curfew begins.

“I stay in Mvurwi, that is where I am heading right now. I am aware there is a curfew and I don’t want to be caught on the wrong side come sunset.

“I had visited the capital to buy some essentials,” said Mr Edgar Shiri.

Among other measures, Government imposed a night curfew from 6pm to 6am for all but essential services and a retreat to 8am to 3pm working hours for exempted businesses along with criminalisation of deliberate or reckless transmission of Covid-19.
