JUST IN: Body of drowned Mwenezi man recovered

The police Sub-Aqua Unit has found the body of a missing Mwenezi man who disappeared last week when a vehicle he was travelling-in was swept away while trying to cross a flooded river in Ward 17.

Mr Collet Gumbo (age not known) drowned in the flooded Chambarara River last Friday and his body has been missing since then.

Four other passengers, including the driver, travelling in the same vehicle with Gumbo survived after one of them climbed in a tree while others managed to swim across to safety.

Masvingo provincial information officer Mr Rodgers Irimai today said police retrieved Gumbo’s body following an intensive search operation.

He said the body was retrieved about 3km from where Gumbo’s car was washed away by floods.
“Mr Collet Gumbo’s body was retrieved by the police Sub-Aqua Unit about 3km downstream from where the vehicle he was travelling in was washed away while trying to cross Chambarara River in Ward 17 of Mwenezi,” said Mr Irimai.

Mr Irimai said all Gumbo’s four colleagues were safe.
Mr Gumbo’s vehicle was travelling in the Mujingwe area when tragedy struck upon getting to Chambarara River.
The driver decided to cross the flooded river and after moving for a few metres in the water it started sinking in the floods.
