TWO people were killed, while two others were seriously injured by an elephant in two separate incidents reported in Mbire District last week. Shorayi Zukuzuku (44) and her daughter Dudzayi (6), from Mugunha Village in Chief Matsiwo’s area, were attacked by a bull elephant while working in their field last Friday.

Dudzayi died on the spot, while her mother was seriously injured and is admitted at Guruve Hospital.
In another incident, an elephant injured a four-year-old boy before attacking and killing a 12-year-old girl while she was going to the fields.
Mbire Member of National Assembly Cde Douglas Karoro confirmed the two incidents.

“On April 14, the bull passed through Nyagonye Village at around 8am and came across children playing outside”, he said.
“It charged at them and seriously injured a four-year-old boy. The boy was rushed to Chitsungo Hospital where he is recovering.

“The same elephant came across a 12-year-old girl, Vimbai Kayupe going to the fields. It attacked and killed her.”
The Problem Animal Control team comprising the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and council officials tracked the elephant which had joined another herd and killed it. Cde Karoro called on Government to act on elephant attacks now a common occurrence in the area.
