The opposition MDC-T party has said it is now time to earnestly weed-out corruption, now that Zimbabwe’s call for the removal of sanctions has reached the doors of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU) and the world at large. MDC-T vice president Mr Obert Gutu said the solidarity that has been shown by the regional bloc and AU was a sure sign that the fight against the illegal embargo has propelled to a higher level.

He said more effort needed to be put in fighting corruption as it was also crippling the economy. “It’s now beyond debate that the fight against sanctions on Zimbabwe has won a resounding by-in and endorsement from SADC, AU and the entire progressive world,” said Mr Gutu.

“We now move on to the phase of identifying, curbing and eliminating all forms of corruption.”

Meanwhile, chairperson of the African Union Commission Mr Moussa Faki also called for the immediate removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe in continuity of his call during his visit to Zimbabwe in February last year.

Mr Faki reiterated his concerns that the economic sanctions imposed by the international community continue to have negative impact on the economy and the people of Zimbabwe.

He expressed his determination and that of the various relevant organs of the AU to continue to mobilise support for the country’s recovery efforts.

Mr Faki commended the Government of Zimbabwe for its efforts to create a conducive environment for economic growth and assured Government and the Zimbabwean citizenry of the continued support of the AU towards the country’s road to peace and prosperity for all its citizens.
