Three people died on the spot while six others were injured, some of them seriously, in road accidents involving two haulage trucks and a Ford Ranger truck that occurred at the same spot along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road on Monday.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the accidents which he said occurred at the 85km peg around 9am.

He said the injured six were admitted to Kwekwe General Hospital.

“I can confirm that we are investigating fatal road accidents which occurred at the same spot, that is the 85km peg along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road on October 14 around 9am,” said Insp Goko.

He said the tyre of a Ford Ranger travelling from Kwekwe to Gokwe and drawing a trailer burst at the 85km peg resulting in it veering off the road and rolling several times before landing on its roof and killing one passenger.

Insp Goko said the trailer got unhinged from the Ford Ranger and remained on the left lane of the road.

“An AVM haulage truck that was following the Ford Ranger hit the trailer but there were no fatalities,” he said.

“Another haulage truck which was coming from the opposite direction with five passengers on board swerved to avoid hitting the AVM haulage truck and the trailer which were blocking the road and it veered off the road before rolling and killing two passengers on the spot. A total of three passengers died and six other were injured in the three accidents,” he said.

Insp Goko said appealed to drivers to be extra careful on the roads to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

“We are appealing to drivers to check the safety and fitness of their vehicles before embarking on their journeys and to adhere to road rules and regulations. Investigations are still continuing,” said Insp Goko.
