A 31-YEAR-OLD Mutare man has been jailed five years after he was convicted of illegal possession of diamonds. Fibian Munyuki was last year found in possession of five pieces of diamonds which he had sourced from Chiadzwa.

He contravened Section 3(1) as read with Section 3(2) of the Precious Stones Act Chapter 21:06.

The prosecutor Mr Brian Goto told the court that on December 2 last year, police received information that Munyuki was on his way from Chiadzwa with diamonds.

“Reports were that Munyuki was on his way from Chiadzwa Diamond Mining Fields, heading to Mutare Central Business District to meet potential buyers.

Detectives intercepted him and on being searched, Munyuki was found in possession of five pieces of diamonds in a plastic sachet stashed in his pocket,” said Mr Goto.

Munyuki failed to produce a permit authorising him to deal in or possess the diamonds and was arrested. The diamonds were recovered and taken to the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) for assessment and weighing.
