AWARD-winning and Herald Mashonaland West Bureau Chief Walter Nyamukondiwa has scooped two prestigious Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) provincial awards. Nyamukondiwa won the Best Environmental and Agricultural Reporter of the Year award at a colourful ceremony held at a local hotel in Chinhoyi last Thursday.

He was also nominated first runner up in the Courts Reporter of the Year category. Journalists competed in seven categories where The Herald dominated. Herald correspondent Conrad Mupesa also raised the Zimpapers flag high when he was nominated first runner up in the Agriculture category.

In the Environment category, Nyamukondiwa was recognised for his extensive coverage on the discharge of mercury into the environment by artisanal miners and attendant threats to the health of both humans and animals.

He was also recognised for investigating and exposing the manipulation of moisture content at GMB depots to the prejudice of farmers in the agriculture value chain. Addressing journalists during the event, guest of honour Environmental Management Agency (EMA) board member Mrs Barbra Rwodzi praised the role being played by journalists in the development of the country.

“Journalists are important to the nation as they contribute immensely to the development of the nation through their positive reportage,” she said.

Mrs Rwodzi urged journalists to maintain ethics, professionalism and balanced reporting.

Zimplats head of corporate affairs, Mrs Busi Chindove, who represented the main sponsors of the event also praised the high level of professionalism from journalists in Mashonaland West province.

“Quality and standard of journalism from the province is making great impact at national level,” she said.

EMA, the Jena Family and Agriculture Marketers Association president Mr Berean Mukwende also sponsored the event. Nyamukondiwa thanked Zimpapers for giving him the platform to express himself.

“I would like to thank Zimpapers as a stable, especially The Herald Editor-in-Chief Mr Caesar Zvayi for giving me the opportunity to work in the province. Their patience and encouragement is unparalleled. Everyone in the province has also played their part in shaping me. Above all, a great thank you to the Lord and His servants who attend to the spiritual side of my being,” he said.
