Hello summer!

We are in August and we say goodbye to winter, hello summer.

Some have said that August brings colourful mood and atmosphere because it is beginning of summer.

In Europe it is spring, while in Africa we celebrate summer. Temperatures are still a bit low but, soon enough they will rise as the summer sun comes upon us.

August is associated with sunny, windy weather and it is time to ditch those heavy jackets as we have all been waiting for this moment of wearing shorts, mini-skirts and vests. It is now time to take elements of a new wardrobe.

In other words, we are swapping the tracksuit for the slightly fancier but no less simple ‘matching set’.

For gents, those light-weight Adidas tracksuits can still cross over to summer provided you know how to wear them correctly.

For the ladies, it is now the time to let the hair free, enjoy the Afro-kinky hair and for those who love wigs and weaves, it is time for long weaves which accentuate your style.

By the way this is the season for heavy make-up.

However, since the sunny days are here, the idea of wearing any outfit at all becomes more difficult, so make sure to stock a solid rotation of go-to dresses, stylish lounge-wear, and shorts that are comfortable, but not too casual.

And we are still at home too.

According to local fashionista Lillian “Hollywood Lee” Madyara you need to refresh with a new patterned dress this summer.

“You need to understand something about this season that accessories play a pivotal role in any outfit. A classic white button-up is a staple.

“Just update for summer with breathable fabric and a silhouette that can be easily dressed up or down and then complete the outfit with white denim and simple accessories,” she said.

She said you can stand out this season with a bold colour or two, which is effortless to achieve with a good dress.

“Compare and contrast the punchy hue with accessories made from natural materials, if you want. Jumpsuits are another great ‘one and done’ outfit, but in the summer heat we prefer the jumpsuit’s younger cousin, the ‘romper’. To keep it from looking too young, stick to just a few sleek accessories,” she explained.

Those who typically avoid shorter hemlines, try long-line shorts — the wider leg is breezy even on the hottest days.

Here are quick tips on how to update your wardrobe

Shoes:  Whether you are walking to the office or having brunch with friends, you can wrap a pair of strappy heels around the ankle of your cigarette pants, jeans, or slacks. Complete the look with a matching jacket, or an off-the-shoulder blouse. This is a refreshing take on a classic style that is sure to turn heads.

Going retro: Take it back to the 19th century with the Victorian-inspired trendy sleeves. Yes, most girls are seen donning it, for those in the dark, its oversized shape creates the illusion of a slimmer waist and adds an instant feminine touch to your ensemble.

You can opt for soft colours, or unleash your inner gothic princess in black or grey. I admire local fashion stylist Tarry MK and Pokello as they once posed wearing such. Summer is also a great time to pull out your vintage ‘80s puff sleeve looks.

The bucket hat: Popularised by United States rapper Lil Wayne, you need to block out the sun and do it in style with a pastel bucket hat.

This cute and trendy accessory looks impressive during any season of the year and is so versatile that you can wear it with almost anything. From a zesty lemon to a light beige, these soft shades are the most timeless options for a fantastic outfit.
